Ask proggit: How to recognize numbers from pictures

As the subject suggest I have a picture (png) from which I would like to read some numbers from. I know, to some degree, where the numbers are located in the picture and I can probably find the font with which the numbers are written. This is not some captcha-image. The picture has no twists or turns on top, across or beneath the actual numbers. Could anyone suggest a method with which I can get these numbers from the picture down to an integer so I can use it in some calculations. I don't which language or API has to be used. Thank you.
