Discovery encompasses channels from Animal Planet and Planet Green to TLC and the Oprah network.

No wonder Oprah is doing the narration for Life.

I have made the painful decision to boycott Life on the discovery network because I do not support Oprah's peddling of homeopathy nor her endorsement of quacks like Dr. Phil. She is an active force for making millions of american women dumber and therefore has no place narrating an educational documentary. My David Attenborough BBC blu-rays are on preorder and I look forward to their arrival in June with great anticipation.

level 3

You can buy the David Attenborough blu-ray of Life right now from amazon UK. They're not region coded, but do output in 50hz instead of 60hz which is what most US televisions require. My Samsung player can convert the signal to 60hz, but my PS3 can't. It was also really cheap buying from amazon UK for some reason. I've watched each episode twice already on my 54" plasma and have been completely blown away.

I wonder if my samsung player can convert? What's your model? Mine was a really cheap one...

edit: Awesome tip. I will google my player when I get home and see if it can convert the signal from 50 to 60hz. If it can, it's on like donkey kong. I'll just cancel the other order, or if I can't, keep it as a gift. I was bummed about having to wait until June. In short, you rock!

David Attenborough is orders of magnitude ahead of Oprah. Such a shame.

level 4

I'm a fan of Sigourney Weaver and absolutely love her for Gorillas in the Mist, but I was outraged when I saw an American broadcast of Planet Earth and her voice was dubbed over David Attenborough's. There is no one, absolutely no one, who can replace David Attenborough when it comes to nature documentaries, and I'm still sour that Discovery denied millions of Americans the opportunity to discover that wonderful man.

I work at a lab in a certain prestigious university. One day, I was on my way to lab, and just as I opened the door to the hallway, I saw the skinnier guy from Mythbusters staring at me! I looked to my right and there was the walrus guy! To my left was a camera crew. They were all staring at me hostilely; I had just interrupted them filming a scene. When I realized this, I proclaimed: "Please don't blow up my lab, I work here." and left. The look on walrus guy's face as I said this was priceless.

Does anyone happen to know if Adam still reads/posts here?

level 7

he's admitted before that he doesn't post, just reads submissions and comments. after his interview, Reddit actually sniffed out his possible usernames, and a user titled "ASavage" was deemed the most likely candidate, since the name fits, the timeline (user for [years]), and the lack of comment history. I don't know if he still lurks Reddit or not, but he does have an account.

level 5
[deleted]
61 points · 8 years ago

Telling kids they're special, or telling kids they're smart, does no good for them. Instead, we should praise children for hard work and actions displaying integrity. Praising the process instead of the product can help children to cope and overcome the more difficult tasks they'll face as an adult.

level 6
45 points · 8 years ago

I completely agree with you except I do think that there is a place for unconditional regard, especially at a young age. Kids need the encouragement to take on challenge in the first place.

level 7

Unconditional love, yes. Unconditional acceptance? Sure, a good thing.

Unconditional praise? Not so good.

Is it possible to reverse-seed a torrent? Like, I would set it up so that my computer is continually downloading it, deleting it, and then re-downloading it without ever uploading. Thus, I would be wasting a portion of the seeding bandwidth.

Tell the Discovery Channel your opinion on their 'new hire'.

level 2
[deleted]
119 points · 8 years ago

I wrote them (after 3 fucking pages of choosing the proper category! what a stupid contact form.)

I have watched Discovery Channel for as far back as I can remember. It was the best source of information available on TV, and it is the sole reason I fell in love with Earth Sciences at a young age. Sadly, your programming has steadily gotten worse over the years, and my disappointment culminates in reading today's article relating to Sarah Palin's upcoming reality show on Discovery Networks. (refer: http://justjared.buzznet.com/2010/03/23/sarah-pain-headed-to-discovery-networks/)

This lady has not a scientific bone in her body, denies evolution, and is one of the biggest airheads in American Politics. Why you would choose her to anchor a show that will be watched by millions of kids eludes me. It eludes reason. I am not American and have no political agenda against Sarah Palin. But I certainly do not want my kids learning from someone who is an opponent of the scientific method.

If this show gets approved, it is a sad day for science.

level 3
21 points · 8 years ago

"I'm concerned by a recent announcement that Discovery is considering running a program on Alaska hosted by Sarah Palin. Discovery is known for its scientific and nature-related programming that focuses on wonder, objective reasoning and conservation, but the views that Sarah Palin has espoused to date appear to represent the exact antithesis of what Discovery is all about. She’s promoted drilling for oil in pristine Alaskan wilderness, encouraged the aerial slaughter of wolves, rejected the notion of human-caused climate change despite staggering scientific consensus (though she agrees that the climate is probably warming), pushed to have polar bears delisted from the endangered species list in opposition to the recommendations of scientists and local researchers, and is a denier of evolution. In short, she has become known for the distain she has shown of both wildlife and scientific thought. Given the number of kids and adults who watch your shows for education, insight and a sense of wonder at the natural world, I can’t believe that Discovery would seriously consider airing a program like this."

here's mine Dear Discovery channel, I can honestly say that my life has been changed for the better by your programs. From a very young age I turned to your networks not only for entertainment but also to expand my knowledge of our beautiful world. But as of late your programming has veered away from the educational to the sensationalist, and today I hear you're giving once half-term Alaskan governor Sarah Palin a show. This is incredible, how can a person whom actively denies science work for the discovery channel? I'm sorry but unless this is all an elaborate hoax, I'm going to have to stop watching your networks and using your websites. Thank you for all you've done for me but our time has obviously passed.

"You've left no room to complain on your forms, so I'm using this one. I've recently read that Sarah Palin's Alaska! is set to be run by Discovery Networks (not sure what channel yet), and this absolutely disgusts me. As an ardent long-time viewer of both the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, I implore you not to pay this terrible human being a cent. The entire show would legitimize her in a way that no other amount of media attention could.

If this show runs on the Discovery Channel or any channels owned by Discovery Networks, you will have lost me as a subscriber and I will request to my local cable provider to have all Discovery Network channels removed from the broadcast. Please, for all that is rational and decent, don't give that thing a nature show.

Thanks."

level 3

I also wrote Discovery and started another reddit thread (before I saw these comments):

As a frequent viewer I found a rumor I saw this morning appalling.

http://justjared.buzznet.com/2010/03/23/sarah-pain-headed-to-discovery-networks/

If there is a shred of truth to this I will have to cease my support of Discovery's programming and request that my local cable provider remove all Discovery channels from service. Sarah Palin has zero respect for Alaska's natural beauty. Her repeated attempts to encourage aerial wolf hunting in order to drive up game populations for human sport are antithetical to respecting natural wonder. A few links to describe what I am talking about are provided below:

http://www.adfg.state.ak.us/news/2007/5-11-07_nr.php

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zr183lk-wQk

http://www.wolfsongnews.org/news/Alaska_current_events_2074.html

Even though the $150 bounty placed on each wolf by Palin was eventually overturned by the AK Supreme Court, it is unacceptable that Discovery would consider giving this woman a platform to take a reverse stand on past policy decisions. It is inevitable that during a show on Alaska that the wolves would be mentioned, and the thought of her attempting to describe their majesty wretches my stomach. Please do not give this chillbilly a platform, she does not deserve it. Find an Alaskan with a history of REAL conservation to narrate the show.

This show is going to give her publicity and a forum to cultivate her wholesome, down-to-earth hockey Mom image and endear herself to people while she takes in $1.2 million per episode. Meanwhile since she's not in office, she doesn't have to make decisions or take positions on issues she will have to defend later on the campaign trail nor will she have as much of an opportunity to say stupid things that can be made into sound bites by her opponents.

I'd be shocked if she doesn't take this publicity and money and leverage it into a presidential campaign down the road.

Later on, I got a strange image, "I'm Mike Rowe, and this is my job" Flesh on flesh slapping noises

I cringe with the thought of seeing her fucking face on commercials for this show on the discovery channel while I am trying to enjoy the few moments per week where they actually have a few decent shows airing. I am afraid after I see her face once in an ad for her show I will immediately change the channel with no intentions to ever view it again. Even if she is just going to be reading cue cards and narrating, it will be painfully obvious that she has no knowledge about any of what she speaks when her hallow voice comes through the airwaves.

Here was my feedback:

So I just read that Discovery is planning to do an Alaska nature series ... which is wonderful. But that you've chosen Sarah Palin as the narrator ... which is batshit insane.

How exactly do you justify putting someone who doesn't believe in evolution in a position to educate people about science.

Regardless of politics Sarah Palin is a simply an ignorant person when it comes to science and she actively opposes the 'perils of intellectualism'.

I mean seriously ... were the people who made this decision smoking crack in the boardroom? Who in their right mind could possibly think this was a good idea?

This woman proposed legislation and cash incentives to encourage aerial wolf gunning, the controversial practice of shooting wolves from an aircraft.

What is your show going to be about ... all the different ways to slaughter the wildlife in Alaska?

How about instead you put her on Mythbusters so they can test the myth that she actually has a brain.

I certainly won't be watching any show narrated by this moron and most of your core audience won't either.

Choose someone qualified or just don't bother.

The Discovery Channel was always shit. I used to work there. They've got no conscience what so ever. The only good programmes they ever showed were the ones they bought from the BBC.

Personally I dont think someone who supported hunting wolves from helicopters is the best person to host a show about nature, since she obviously doesn't understand how those sort of things works. (predators are a very important part of nature, you cant just kill them, they are necessary to weed of the sick and weak animals) We can only hope some large animal eats her during the recording while her back is turned. (sure you can say thats an evil thing to say, but its just nature)

Discovery's following the same fatal path as the History channel, and it will only doom the network. Instead of keeping true to its origins and creating programming for its core audience, it's assigning new programming to chance a broader audience. In the process, it's alienating its core audience.

The result is fairly predictable: discovery in the short term will get a ratings increase. The increase will be the lowest common denominator audience which will make up for the decrease in core fans. Over time, the lowest common denominator audience will become bored, and tune out. The problem is that discovery will have lost its core audience in the process.

So, in the short run, it sounds like a good idea for somebody looking for immediate returns on investments. For anyone with long-term interests in the network, however, it's a horrible idea. The network will kill itself.

This isn't Discovery Channel, it is Discovery Communications. From the article:

Discovery Communications will apparently be helming the project after outbidding A&E Networks, according to THR. Discovery encompasses channels from Animal Planet and Planet Green to TLC and the Oprah network

So the show could be on Animal Planet

Doesn't really matter which one they put it on. The same company that owns the Discovery channel is paying Sarah Palin to be on TV. Fuck them.

Just a reflection of America. Bum-fuck mentality at its finest. This is the harvest of decades of educational neglect in this country. This is not to blame the teachers in particular. Most are doing what they can with very limited resources. We have all contributed to this in one way or another. As a culture, we place more value on entertainment than intellectual curiosity. See trends in sports, politics, journalism, environment, the economy etc...

Everything has slowly gone to shat after we landed on the moon. I truly believe this is the root of the majority problems we face today. The are you not entertained way of life has fucked us as a (w)hole.

The stoopid entertains, it's the thinking that hurts.

How befitting; she's a perfect posterboy for the kind of Science Discovery Channel dabbles in these days.

AFAIK, the most expensive nature programme ever remains BBC's Planet Earth, which is one the best nature documentaries ever to be filmed, and the budget was spent entirely on, y'know, filming nature, not some idiot's excessive presenting fee.

Welp. Sorry Mike Rowe and mythbusters. See ya later.

I told her that "it's life, hence the title, deal with it".

She told me that "it's Life, and I was going to change the channel, deal with it."

You should have changed the channel to Animal Planet, or TLC, or one of the other 900 channels it was "Simulcast" on.

Am I the only one who finds the idea of broadcasting the same show on several different channels at the same time completely antithetical to the current state of information/content delivery (to say nothing of scheduled TV in and of itself...)?

Palin's plan "Operation Money Grab" is now at 85% completion. The final stage is to get a syndicated talk show and become the the female Rush.

That's the bad new, the good news is that she is at 85% of her exit from politics. She is heading to the rich cornucopia of pundit land, and is using the pretext of possibly running again to keep her band of supporters around in order to give her the momentum she needs to launch her over that fence. Mark my words, in the next several months you will start to hear her drop hints she can do a lot more to change Washington from the outside than from with-in.

Sarah Palin's Alaska....is that the Alaska where every last corner of natural land has been drilled for oil, or the Alaska where everyone gets to fly around on helicopters shooting animals for "sport"?
